“Igniting the Spark, Honouring the Soul: The Role of Creativity in Our Lives”
Have you noticed how very young children move? They hop if they feel like hopping, skip for a while, jump when they come to something worth jumping over, then maybe notice a bird in flight and open their arms to fly, or come to a stop and crouch down to look at something small and fascinating on the ground, or set off in a run because running feels so good–all according to their whim of the moment. Their movement expresses who they are.
Adults express themselves too, in their choice of dress, style, home, etc., but we tend to assign “real” creativity to artists. Poets and writers craft their poetry and prose with vivid images and touch us with their insight. Visual artists use line and colour and shape to tell a story in form, to leave an impression or suggest a question. Musicians and songwriters use melody to evoke moods and reflect. All the traditional arts express some aspect of what it means to be human and to live in this world, with all its brokenness and beauty.
But what role does creativity have in the life of a non-artist? What science has found, in the last half-century, is that we each have access to many different modes of thinking and perceiving. While we may be oriented in one particular way, as a visual, auditory or kinesethetic learner, we can access other ways of perceiving through a practice of creativity. This not only improves our ability to problem-solve and come up with creative solutions, it also enhances our ability to enjoy life.
Creative expression is an essential part of every human life, whether it is our profession or not.
In a talk and afternoon workshop, storyteller and writer Margo McLoughlin will explore the connections between creativity, happiness and living a balance, healthy, meaningful life.
